Images of Constructed Lab Models (built by Young Scholars 2018)
Meandering River Model: pictures below show a model that can be used to visualize how pollutants flow through a river environment, with associated meanders (in this type of river environment as water flows, it deposits sediment on banks that lie on the insides of curves , and erode the banks on the outside of curves). Video evidence (as seen in the RESEARCH IN THE LAB link) shows that pollutant behavior mimics that of sediment with the greatest movement on the outside of the curves and the slowest movement on the inside of the curves.
Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor: pictures below show a model that was developed to show a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR). The CSTR was used to study how water with a high concentration of pollutant (inflow) could be treated in the reactor and allow water to exit the reactor with a lower concentration of pollutant (out flow). A full research investigation was accomplished in the lab using this theory and can be found in the RESEARCH IN THE LAB link.
Dispersion Plate / Table: pictures below show a model used to compare laminar (straight) flow of a pollutant compare to interrupted flow as water flows around obstacles, this was accomplished using a dispersion plate / table. Comparative videos of the flow patterns can be found in the RESEARCH IN THE LAB link.
